Christmas Cones Tutorial

DIY – Christmas Cones Tutorial

Here is a quick and fun tutorial to make some Christmas cones.  These cones were a tradition in my family growing up, and now that I’m older, I’m continuing the tradition with my own family.  I make one a year after the season is done in rememberence of the year.  You can fill them with treats or other goodies and hang them anywhere.  We usually put them on our tree. Enjoy!

The skinny:

I’m going to upcycle and reuse some material for my Christmas cones including tissue paper from presents given to us and the Christmas card that we made up to send out to our family and friends.  These are really fun and easy to make and can be done in a single sitting.  Enjoy!

Materials:

  • poster board
  • ribbon
  • wrapping paper/tissue paper
  • any pictures you want to put on your cone (our Christmas card from this year)
  • hole puncher
  • tape or glue
  • scissors
  • a compass or something round to use as a guide
  • ruler or something to use as a straight edge
  • marker (I always write the year on my cones)

Instructions:

1.  Using a compass or something round as a guide, make a circle onto your poster board.  Keep in mind that the radius of the circle will be the height of your Christmas cone.  Cut this out. *My circle has a diameter of 13½”.

2.  Cut a wedge of the circle out, like you’re cutting out a slice of pumpkin pie.  Generally speaking, the more narrow the wedge, the wider your Christmas cone will be.  Try to form the cone shape and see if you need to adjust the size of the wedge you cut out.  I ended up cutting more from my circle.

3.  Twist your poster board together until you get the desired shape and width for your cone.  Tape or glue in place.  Make it as secure as you can. I ended up using staples to help secure it.

4.  Paper the outside of your cone with your tissue/wrapping paper and adhere your picture(s) on.

5.  Use your hole puncher to punch two holes opposite from each other around the cone edge.  Cut your ribbon to your desired length (mine was 15″).  Put it through one hole in your cone and tie a knot on the part of the ribbon inside the cone.  Do the same for the opposite end.
