Today I am going to be adding fisheye darts to this lovely tunic my coworker gave me. This is a quick and easy way to add a little shape to the silhouette of a piece of clothing.

The skinny:

There are a wide variety of dart types you can make. This is just one of many. If you are adding the darts in pairs like I am here, just take care to make sure that they’re lined up with each other as accurately as possible. A ruler always comes in handy for me!

Materials:

  • a tunic, shirt, or dress
  • matching thread

Instructions:

1.  Turn the tunic wrong side out and try it on to determine how much you want to take in. Pin it on each side.

Turn your tunic inside out (I didn’t and should have) and pin where you want to add the darts. I am doing it on either side of the tunic. If you notice, my pins don’t match up when I did it by hand. This is why it’s so important to use a ruler!

2. Using a ruler, mark out the middle of the dart. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Mark two points on either end then add a point below the first, which will create the shape of a diamond folded lengthwise. Make sure they’re as even as you can make them! My points are 2″ from the center both ways, then 1/2″ down in width below the center point.

On the left, the five points represent the diamond pattern for the dart. From the middle, the length was 2″ and the width was ½”. Before sewing, fold the fabric along the dotted line, which is lengthwise on the tunic.

Sketch this out with some fabric chalk. Sew along the sketch lines, keeping the lines as straight as possible. Do this on either side of the front tunic. Use a ruler to make sure your darts are lined up!

3. Sew along the lines.

4. Next, snip into the middle of the shape you just sewed. This will keep the fabric from bulging too much. If you want, you can do like I did and trim the edges off and use a zigzag stitch to sew it in place.

The fisheye dart in action. Sew the two lines in a compact v shape. Trim off excess fabric. Use the zigzag stitch (or serge) the raw edge of the fabric to prevent it from fraying.

5. Try it on. Repeat and add pairs of darts as needed until you get the fit you like. I’m going to add one more pair of darts in the front.

This is what the darts look like when added to the fabric. Note the tunic is inside out. I decided to add another pair of darts after these.
